Cashless Card Reader for Vending Machine: Mount, Network and Offline Store

Review controller bus wiring, external cellular antenna placement and offline store-and-forward limits before commissioning a cashless card reader for a vending machine. Prepare the controller, power supply, signal and reconciliation details for your quotation so wiring faults or unverified offline settings do not cause failed vends and lost sales.

MDB bus topology, peripheral addressing and session initialization

When specifying a cashless card reader for a vending machine or a cashless payment system for a vending machine retrofit, verify the controller bus revision, peripheral address assignment and session flow in the written proposal.

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, the interface is a 9600 baud Master-Slave arrangement where all peripherals are Slaves to a Master controller.

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, there is one Master with capability of communicating with up to thirty-two peripherals, and the Master is defined as the Vending Machine Controller (VMC).

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, the data block and CHK byte are limited to a maximum size of 36 bytes.

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, when a peripheral responds with a data block, the VMC must respond with an ACK, NAK or RET, and if the Master cannot respond within the 5 mS time-out (t-response) the peripheral must repeat the data block, or append it, at the next possible occasion (i.e. to a later POLL).

The NAMA MDB/ICP specification defines dual addresses for two Cashless Device peripherals (10h and 60h).

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, MDB cashless devices may be viewed as state machines with the following states: 1) Inactive, 2) Disabled, 3) Enabled, 4) Session Idle, 5) Vend, 6) Revalue (Level 02/03 cashless devices), and 7) Negative Vend (Level 03 cashless devices).

According to Vending Connection, MDB Version 4.3 revisions only appear in Section 7 – Cashless Devices, while all other sections of MDB Version 4.3 remain identical to those of MDB 4.2.

In the Qibixx MDB Cheat Sheet, earlier versions of the MDB Specification allowed only Coins and Bills, and if the machine is not compliant with such versions, it is not possible to use Cashless Peripherals as Payment Media on them.

According to Vending Connection, you may be able to upgrade a vending machine by investing in a new control board, and that upgrade can cost between $300-$600 per machine.

In Qibixx MDB Pi Hat documentation, the Pi Hat can be connected to the VMC as a Slave and to the Payment Peripherals as a Master for cases where it is necessary to translate messages.

In Qibixx cashless device documentation, in always Idle Mode, the selection of the product is made on the machine prior to presenting the card to approve the vend request.

In Qibixx vending session documentation, d,STATUS,INIT,1 tells you that the reader is always idle capable.

MDB bus power supply, harness pinout and transient brownouts

Check the VMC bus power output, harness connector housings and peripheral current draw before daisy-chaining a cashless reader and cellular telemetry unit onto an existing harness.

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, VMC Voltage Output is Minimum = 20 VDC rms. (rectified and optionally filtered) and Nominal = 34 VDC unreg. (rectified and filtered) or 24 VDC rms. (rectified only).

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, VMC Voltage Output Maximum is 42.5* VDC (ripple voltage upper limit), where high line input may allow 45 VDC peak (max.).

In the Qibixx MDB Cheat Sheet pinout table, Pin 1 is Minimum - 20VDC and Nominal - 34 VDC (MDB Power High).

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, power supply filtering is optional, therefore if a peripheral requires more power or tighter regulation, they may elect to supply their own power or filtering.

In Qibixx Pi Hat troubleshooting documentation, the power supply capabilities can deliver up to 3A, which is enough for most of the Pi Models, but may be on the fringe for Raspberry Pi 4.

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification example of a RESET COMMAND sent to a cashless device, whereas the cashless device itself receives the command without error, the bill validator in the system sees a voltage transient (corruption) of the address byte.

In the NAMA MDB/ICP specification, the out of sequence message usually causes the VMC to send a reset command to re-sync the devices, which can cause the cashless device to run into problems because the reset sequence of a lot of cashless devices can take many seconds, during which the customer is unable to use their cards.

Metal cabinet attenuation, cellular signal thresholds and roof antenna mounting

Check cellular reception at the exact installation spot and mount the external antenna outside the sheet-metal cabinet before closing the service door.

As reported by Vending Times, Cantaloupe reported 1.28 million active devices in 2025, while Nayax ended the year with approximately 1.46 million managed and connected devices.

As reported by Vending Times, Cantaloupe separately reported that cashless payments represented 78% of vending sales processed through its platform in 2025, up from 73% the year before.

According to Vending Times, metal equipment, thick walls and the vending cabinet itself can weaken a signal, and an external high-gain antenna can improve reception, particularly when it is mounted on top of the machine rather than enclosed inside the cabinet.

As reported by Vending Connection, Nayax's EasiFit couples the VPOS Touch with a proprietary adaptor to allow for cash and cashless acceptance at the machine from the same knock-out hole.

In the Teltonika Networks Wiki, RSSI in LTE represents the total wideband received power measured over the full channel bandwidth, including noise, serving cell power, and interference power, which makes RSSI unreliable without considering RSRP, RSRQ, and SINR.

Offline store-and-forward controls, commercial benchmarks and vend reconciliation

Define whether the payment terminal blocks sales or queues transactions during a network outage, and verify how payment approvals are reconciled against physical product delivery.

According to Vending Times, in an offline EMV transaction, the chip and terminal determine whether the payment can proceed based on rules set by the issuer, whereas under store and forward, the terminal accepts the transaction without receiving authorization and submits it later.

According to Vending Times, a vending operator could lose both the revenue and the product if a delayed transaction is declined, and providers can limit that exposure by setting a maximum transaction amount, restricting the number or total value of offline purchases and limiting how long a device may remain offline.

According to Vending Times, a reader can have a strong network connection and successfully authorize a payment but still fail to initiate a vend if a cable is loose, the machine is configured incorrectly or the controller does not respond.

According to The Vending Club, operators should test vend cycles for every selection after install because a miswired MDB causes ghost sales or free vends.

On SelfServiceMachines' Payment Integration Verification Matrix page, a payment success screen alone is insufficient evidence of a completed machine transaction.

Run a complete selection, card tap and physical delivery check across every tray selection before placing the machine into service.

Review failed payment, failed service and refund workflow — Separate declined payments, authorized charges without completed delivery and operator refund intake rules.

Check combo vending cashless and failed vend tests — Link payment authorization records to delivery sensor events and physical collection on combo cabinets.

Compare payment options and country compatibility — Review merchant account prerequisites, local acquiring coverage and settlement arrangements.

Prepare a cashless payment system and vending machine quotation request

Send SelfServiceMachines your target machine category, controller board model, payment terminal preference, operating country and installation venue. Specify whether the cabinet stands indoors, in a basement corridor or outdoors, and note whether cash acceptors and cashless terminals will share the same front panel cutout.

Request an itemized quotation covering the vending machine, controller interface, payment terminal mounting bezel, external roof antenna routing, offline store-and-forward settings and factory acceptance test checklist so payment authorization and physical product release are verified together before shipment.
